The Blue Jays rookie is on the verge of a return to the big leagues after battling shoulder inflammation.

The Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, the affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, lost 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon against the Rochester Red Wings, the affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

While the loss was disappointing for the Bisons, it paled in comparison to the importance of the outing of right-handed pitcher Trey Yesavage, who was making his third rehab start.

After missing all of spring training with right shoulder inflammation, Yesavage went 4.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five, tossing 71 pitches, 42 for strikes.

It's possible that Yesavage will resume his spot in the rotation following this outing, but the Blue Jays will need to see how he bounces back from the increased workload and assess what they want to do.

Yesavage gave up a home run to Dylan Crews, who is the former No. 2 pick in the draft of Washington. He played his college ball at LSU.

About Yesavage

A first-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2024, Yesavage shot through the minors in 2025, appearing in the big leagues in September and October. The 22-year-old went 1-0 in three starts down the stretch and then won games in the American League Division Series, American League Championship Series and World Series. His performance in Game 6 of the ALCS against Seattle saved Toronto's season and his 12-strikeout win in Game 5 of the World Series was lights out as well.

Because of his late debut in 2025, he is still ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the organization, but he'll quickly fall off once he gets back into action. He's currently listed as the No. 9 prospect in the sport by MLB Pipeline.

While the team certainly doesn't want to see him hurt, ever, having him start his season later and get a smaller workload is likely a good thing in the long run. It will keep him fresher later in the season, and though the Jays are out to a slow start at 7-9, they have aspirations of playing late into October again, meaning they'll want Yesavage available for playoff innings.

It's unclear how the Blue Jays will handle things when he returns, but it's probable that Patrick Corbin loses his spot in the rotation.

After winning on Tuesday night, the Jays enter play on Wednesday with that 7-9 record. They'll take on the Milwaukee Brewers in game two of a three-game series at 7:40 p.m. ET.

Right-hander Dylan Cease will battle against righty Chad Patrick.

Cease is 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA so far while Patrick is 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA.
