Shane Bieber has been on the injured list all season, while Dylan Cease just went on the IL. Here's the plan for both.
On Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays provided a pair of reasonably good injury updates on position players Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger.
The reasonably good updates continued on Thursday, with manager John Schneider providing more news on pitchers Dylan Cease and Shane Bieber.
As noted by Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet, Cease is feeling better after playing catch. He went on the injured list on Monday with left hamstring discomfort. The team is hopeful that he'll be able to throw a bullpen this weekend.
Shane Bieber, who has been out all season with forearm fatigue from last year's Tommy John surgery, is rehabbing and should pitch for Class-A Dunedin on Sunday. He's made one rehab start already, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three.
Cease, signed to a seven-year deal worth $210 million, left Sunday's start against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the top of the fifth inning with two outs. Remarkably healthy throughout his career, Cease has made 32 starts or more in each of the last five years and also made a full 12-start workload in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season (60 games). It's unclear how many starts he'll be forced to miss because of this issue and if that 30-start streak is in jeopardy.
About Bieber
About to be 31 years old, Bieber is an eight-year veteran of the Cleveland Guardians and Blue Jays. The Cy Young winner in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he's 66-34 lifetime with a 3.24 ERA. He is a two-time All-Star who won a career-high 15 games in 2019.
Bieber opted in to the final year of his contract over the offseason, which some people found surprising. He went 4-2 in seven regular season starts for the Blue Jays last season, pitching to a 3.57 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 18.2 playoff innings.
About Toronto's injury situation
Arguably the most banged-up team in the league, the Jays are currently missing Bieber, Cease, Barger, Kirk and Max Scherzer. Cody Ponce, Bowden Francis and Jose Berrios are out for the season, while Anthony Santander might be.
George Springer, Trey Yesavage, and Nathan Lukes have all been on the injured list this season, though each is back right now.

The Jays are back in action on Thursday as they start that four-game set against the Orioles at Camden Yards. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. ET as left-hander Patrick Corbin pitches against Chris Bassitt.
Corbin is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA while Bassitt is 4-3 with a 5.51.
