The Jays were swept by the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, losing Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger.
Update, 5:25 p.m. ET: Right after this story was published, Mitch Bannon of 'The Athletic' provided more context from manager John Schneider.
Schneider said Barger hurt both ankles on that early play at first base (with the bases loaded):
“Hopefully he's all right. Hopefully it's just a day or two, or maybe not even a day.”
5:20 p.m. ET: The Toronto Blue Jays were beaten on Sunday by the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field, falling 3-0.
Toronto was swept by the White Sox, completing disastrous back-to-back series against the Colorado Rockies and White Sox, two of the worst teams in baseball in 2025.
The Jays are now 4-5 on the young season, and while the season is certainly early and things can (and likely will) turn around soon, it was a horrific missed opportunity to clean up on some baseball's projected bottom feeders. Instead, Toronto lost both.
And once again, the Jays fell victim to the injury bug. Already down Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, Cody Ponce and Jose Berrios from the starting rotation, and Yimi Garcia from the bullpen, the Jays lost Alejandro Kirk to a fractured left thumb on Friday and Addison Barger was removed from Sunday's game with "bilateral ankle discomfort."
There's no word yet at this time on what it all means and the team will surely know more on Monday.
The injury is the latest in a terrible start for Barger, who is just 1-for-19 to begin the campaign. A breakout star from last season's playoff run, Barger had 21 homers in 2025 and was looking to take the next step this year and be more consistent. His playing time has been more consistent in the wake of Bo Bichette's departure and Anthony Santander's injury, but his results have not matched yet.
There's no point in speculating on what Toronto will do until we know what the prognosis is for Barger, but it's noteworthy that the team did just acquire the versatile Tyler Fitzgerald in a deal with the San Francisco Giants.
