Speaking before Thursday's series finale against the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider gave an interesting injury update on outfielder/designated hitter Anthony Santander, who has been largely forgotten about for much of his first two years in Toronto.

Signed to a five-year deal before the 2025 season, Santander has played just 54 games with the Jays, hitting .175 with six home runs. Each of those 54 games came a season ago, with him missing most of the campaign with a shoulder injury.

Santander returned for the end of the regular season, but was removed during the American League Championship Series for a back issue. He had surgery this offseason on that troublesome labrum.

But on Thursday, Schneider said that Santander is working back and could be a part of the roster down the stretch. The Blue Jays are targeting an August return, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

Now 31 years old, Santander is a nine-year veteran of the Baltimore Orioles and Blue Jays. He is a career .241 hitter with 161 homers, including a career-high 44 in 2024, which earned him his big payday. He was an All-Star in that season.

If Santander is to come back, the Blue Jays will have plenty of decisions to make. Considering he profiles as a designated hitter, what does that mean for George Springer? Presuming Springer will have to go to the outfield, someone else will be forced out.

But, as the Blue Jays have learned this season, injuries can change everything.

Also per Bannon, Addison Barger, out with an elbow issue, is hoping to get in rehab games later this week or early next week. He's been out for more than a month, and has missed most of the season with multiple injuries.

--Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is now on the injured list with the back spasms that had him scratched from Wednesday night's start. Is there a chance that this is the end for the future Hall of Famer? It certainly feels that way, especially with Shane Bieber working back from his own injury issues. Bieber is potentially making his final rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday night.
