The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman finally hit a home run in his home ballpark on Sunday.
The Toronto Blue Jays moved back to .500 on Sunday afternoon with a dominant 8-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre.
That win keeps the Blue Jays at one game back in the American League wild card race since the Cleveland Guardians also won on Sunday.
The Blue Jays have 12 games left in the regular season as they look to make the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
Toronto lost in the wild card round in 2022 and 2023, missed the playoffs in 2024, and got to the World Series in 2025.
Dylan Cease earned the win in this game, though he wasn't as crisp as usual. The Cy Young candidate walked five over five innings, but struck out nine and gave up just one run. He now has the fifth-most strikeouts (236) in a single-season in team history. With at least two more starts on deck this season, Cease can likely get up to the No. 3 spot on that list. Kevin Gausman (237) and Robbie Ray (248) are both passable, while Roger Clemens (271 and 292) are likely not.
On the offensive side of things, the Blue Jays got home runs from George Springer, Kazuma Okamoto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. For Guerrero, it was his ninth home run of the season, and it was also his first home run of the year at home.
It's been one of the most unfathomable stories of the season that Guerrero hadn't hit a home run at home. One of the most powerful sluggers in the sport, it's been a down year for Guerrero, who is hitting .265 with nine homers, 56 RBIs and a .700 OPS.
Blue Jays fans have been well aware of Guerrero's homerless drought, and you could feel them erupt once this ball landed in the left field bullpen. Jays broadcaster Dan Shulman also erupted, and you can hear his call below.
What's next for Toronto?
The Blue Jays will kick off a new series with the Detroit Tigers on Monday night at Rogers Centre. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. ET as Soriano pitches against the electric young right-hander Troy Melton.
The Tigers are one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season. After getting to the American League Division Series a year ago, they are just 70-79. They also traded away two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline, as well as Casey Mize.
As for the matchup, Soriano is 12-7 with a 3.48 ERA between the Los Angeles Angels and Blue Jays. Melton is 8-4 with a 2.42 ERA in his first full season as a starter. He has a fastball in the upper-90s.
