Scherzer will take the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays Against the Minnesota Twins.

When the Toronto Blue Jays take the field on Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Twins at Rogers Centre, they'll be doing so looking to take the series and move within a game of .500.

The two teams have currently split the first two games of the weekend set and the Jays enter play at 6-8, despite being the most injured team in the league. Toronto just placed outfielder/DH George Springer on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left big toe, and he joins Addison Barger, Alejandro Kirk, Anthony Santander, Cody Ponce, Yimi Garcia, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios and Trey Yesavage on the injured list.

With all those pitchers out, the Jays could use a big start from veteran Max Scherzer in the Sunday finale. In addition to looking to give Toronto some length, he's also looking to make some special baseball history.

He needs just five strikeouts to become the 11th pitcher ever to record 3,500 career Ks.

The other 10? Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Steve Carlton, Bert Blyleven, Tom Seaver, Don Sutton, Justin Verlander, Gaylor Perry and Walker Johnson.

About Scherzer

Now 41, Scherzer is one of the most accomplished players in baseball history. A 19-year veteran of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers and Blue Jays, he's gone 222-118 for his career, holding a career ERA of 3.22.

An eight-time All-Star, Scherzer is also a three-time Cy Young Award winner and a two-time World Series champion (2019, 2023). He has led his league in wins four times and led the National League in strikeouts for three straight years from 2016-18.

He's a clear Hall of Famer whenever he decides to hang up his spikes. He went 5-5 for the Blue Jays last season, pitching well in the playoffs, and he re-signed on a one-year deal this spring as a result of all the pitching injuries.

First pitch is set for 1:37 p.m. ET as Scherzer battles against Taj Bradley. Bradley is 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA while Scherzer is 1-1 with a 3.38.

Also for the Jays

As stated above, the team put outfielder/DH George Springer on the 10-day injured list because of a left big toe fracture on Sunday morning. In a corresponding move, they have recalled outfielder/DH/1B Eloy Jimenez, who was a former Silver Slugger winner with the Chicago White Sox. Jimenez was hitting .257 at Triple-A Buffalo.
