Congratulations are in order for Toronto Blue Jays prospect Tyler Southisene, who hit his first professional home run on Sunday as a member of the High-A Vancouver Canadiens.
Southisene just entered the Jays system at the trade deadline after having been acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the deal that sent Kevin Gausman to the North Side.
About Southisene
Now 21 years old, he was a fourth-round pick of the Cubs in the 2024 MLB Draft out of the high school ranks.
He's undersized at 5-foot-7 and it's unclear if he can stick at shortstop at that size, but he can certainly hit. He's hitting .303 this season between Single-A and High-A, playing 48 games at the latter level.
He has a .422 cumulative on-base percentage to go along with solid speed: He has 31 stolen bases. He's only struck out 41 times in 70 total games, showing again that he has elite bat-to-ball skills.
Again, the power is not expected to be a big part of his game, but at least he's shown that it's in the bag of tricks.
The Blue Jays already have highly-regarded infielder JoJo Parker working through the system, and he was just promoted to High-A as well, meaning Southisene will have an opportunity to work the team's top prospect - and a potential double play partner at the big league level.
Southisene is currently ranked as the No. 17 prospect in a growing Jays' system, which is four spots lower than he was with the Cubs (No. 13). Those rankings come from MLB Pipeline.
About the Jays
The Blue Jays suffered a 7-6 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon, losing in 12 innings. With the loss, Toronto is 56-63 and in last place in the American League East.
While the playoff odds don't look good, they are still just 3.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot in the American League. However, on the flip side, they are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the fourth-worst record in the American League.
It's a far cry from where those two teams were 10 months ago, when they were battling each other to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
The Blue Jays, of course, prevailed and advanced to the World Series, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Blue Jays will be back in action on Monday night against the Boston Red Sox, who have lost their last two games.
