Toronto Blue Jays top prospect Ricky Tiedemann suffered another setback this week - after a career full of them.
Per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Tiedemann is dealing with some elbow soreness and will be shut down for a week.
Health news: Ricky Tiedemann felt some left elbow soreness after his last side session. He underwent an MRI and it was clean, but he’ll back off for a week. #BlueJays
The most important thing is that Tiedemann doesn't have any structural damage, but it's more disappointment for one of the top young left-handed arms in the sport. Still just 23, Tiedemann is a former third-round pick of the Jays. He struck out 82 batters in just 44.0 innings in 2023, dealing with injury, then he made only eight starts in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
He missed all of 2025.
He was ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the organization before the 2025 season from MLB.com and still possesses lots of upside, if he can stay healthy.
Tiedemann's stuff is good enough for him to contribute to the major league team this season, but it would have to be in a bullpen role. He's never thrown more than 78.2 professional innings, and that was back in 2022. While he could still profile as a starter, he'll have to get his workload back up in 2026. However, if he's able to avoid future setbacks and make his debut as a reliever, he could be a dynamic arm for the Jays out of the bullpen as they chase another American League pennant.
Toronto features one of the best rosters in the American League but the left-handed reliever situation bears watching as Mason Fluharty and Brendon Little don't possess the kind of raw strikeout stuff that Tiedemann does.
--Right-hander Jose Berrios, projected to be in the starting rotation because of the injury to Shane Bieber, announced after his start on Monday that he felt some elbow soreness last spring. Berrios pitched most of the season successfully but did go on the injured list in September with elbow inflammation and missed the team's playoff's run.
Manager John Schneider said he was not aware of any discomfort.
