Both teams come in trying to rectify poor starts, and they'll play three games at Rogers Centre.
The Toronto Blue Jays will host the Boston Red Sox for three games at Rogers Centre this week, and both teams come in trying to rectify poor starts to the campaign.
The Blue Jays, who are arguably the most injured team in the league, are at 12-15 and in fourth place in the American League East. The Red Sox, on the other hand, are in last place at 11-17 and just fired manager Alex Cora and several members of his staff. Though the Red Sox won their first game in the post-Cora era on Sunday, there are questions about how the clubhouse will move forward given that it appears unhappy at what's transpired.
Here are the pitching matchups for the series, which begins Monday at 7:07 p.m. ET.
LHP Ranger Suarez (1-2, 4.00 ERA) at RHP Dylan Cease (1-0, 2.10 ERA)
Suarez, signed to a five-year deal this past offseason, is still rounding into full form after playing in the World Baseball Classic. He was roughed up for four earned runs in 4.2 innings in his last outing, but before that, he had spun 14 consecutive scoreless innings.
He doesn't miss many bats, as evidenced by just 14 strikeouts in his last 18.2 frames.
Cease, signed to a seven-year deal, does miss bats. His 44 strikeouts currently lead the majors. The only problem is that his high strikeout totals come at a cost to his pitch count. He's only managed five innings in two of his last three starts, with the third being six innings. He fanned 12 in five innings in his last time out.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease (84) delivers during the first inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium. William Liang-Imagn ImagesPayton Tolle (1-0, 1.50 ERA) at Trey Yesavage (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
This is a battle of two of the top pitching prospects in the game. Tolle, a hard-throwing lefty, is ranked at No. 15 (MLB Pipeline) and just made his season debut last week against the New York Yankees, striking out 11 over six innings. He has four career starts under his belt dating back to least season.
It will be the season debut for Yesavage, who missed the start of the season with a right shoulder impingement. The No. 9 prospect in the sport, he made three regular season starts in 2025 before excelling in the playoffs as the Jays advanced to the World Series.
Brayan Bello (1-3, 9.00 ERA) at Max Scherzer (1-3, 9.64 ERA)
This is a battle of two of the pitchers who are struggling most in the league, and will serve as a hopeful get-right game for both.
Bello, 26, has failed to go past four innings in either of his last two starts, and was hammered for eight runs and 13 hits on Friday night in Baltimore.
Scherzer, the future Hall of Famer, was knocked around by Cleveland on Friday, giving up seven earned runs in 2.1 innings. It's the second time in three starts that he lasted only 2.1 frames.
He needs one strikeout to become the 11th member of the 3,500-strikeout club.
