The Jays are casting a bigger net when it comes to their infield.

According to a recent report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Toronto Blue Jays are showing interest in free agent infielder Alex Bregman.

Team officials have been in recent contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, according to sources briefed on the conversations. Ideally, the Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but either the right-handed Bregman or (Bo) Bichette would fit their defensive alignment better than Tucker or Cody Bellinger, both of whom bat left.

There's a lot to this, so let's examine:

    About Bregman

Currently 31 years old, Bregman will turn 32 just after Opening Day in 2026. A 10-year veteran of the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, he's a three-time All-Star, a two-time World Series champion, a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glover.

He's also seen as a great clubhouse influence.

For his career, he's a .272 hitter with 209 home runs. He's hit 20 or more homers five times. He had 18 in just 114 games last season for Boston.

    Why he works

As noted, the defensive alignment is clean. Bregman could play third, with Andres Gimenez playing shortstop and Ernie Clement sliding to second. That would leave Addison Barger in right, Daulton Varsho in center and one of George Springer and Anthony Santander in left.

    What about Bo?

If Bregman were to sign in Toronto, that would likely mean the end of Bichette's tenure there. Bichette has spent seven years with the Jays and is just 27 years old. It would be hard to lose a homegrown player in free agency, but there is no room for both infielders - unless the team wants to pay big money, and jettison Clement, who is now a playoff legend.

    Are there games at play?

There certainly could be. It's entirely possible that the Jays have initiated these conversations to put pressure on Bichette.

It's also entirely possible that Bregman's camp has initiated these talks in order to put pressure on the Red Sox. Boston is known to want Bregman back, but Boras could be hoping to drive the price up on them (and for his client) by talking to the deep-pocketed Jays.

    What now?

Now, we wait. There's a handful of days before Christmas for something to get done, but if it doesn't, then we likely won't have any business between Christmas and New Years, meaning we'd be dragging the free agent period into early January.
