The Toronto Blue Jays are still knocking on the door of a playoff spot, but haven't been able to make the final push to securing the third wild card spot.
That remained the case Thursday, which saw the Blue Jays lose 2-0 to the Athletics. With the loss, Toronto is 73-74 and one game out of the final wild card spot in the American League.
The nature in which the Blue Jays lost also continued to keep them near the top of baseball in a very disappointing category.
Toronto, which lost its third-of-four games Thursday, grounded into two double plays during the game.
That marked the 109th and 110th time this season the Blue Jays have hit into double plays.
According to a post on "X" from SportsCentre, Toronto's 110 double plays this season is the fifth-worst in the major leagues.
The four teams ahead of the Blue Jays in that statistic are the Athletics (118), San Diego Padres (114), Los Angeles Dodgers (114) and Pittsburgh Pirates (111).
Toronto's woes on offense have been a series-long struggle and shocking given how potent the offense was when it won the American League pennant last season.
The Blue Jays rank 28th in the major leagues in home runs (140), 29th in RBIs (560), 29th in runs (589) and 27th in OPS (.692).
Third baseman Kazuma Okamoto leads the team with 30 home runs. He's one of three players on the team with double-digit homers and has more than twice as many as the player with the second-most homers on the Jays, designated hitter George Springer (14).
Despite Toronto's struggles, it still is control of its own destiny, based on how it does in the rest of its remaining regular season schedule.
The Blue Jays will play the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series at Rogers Centre, the Detroit Tigers in three games at home, the Texas Rangers for three games on the road in Arlington, Texas, the Orioles on the road for three games and will host the Cincinnati Reds for three games at home to close out the season.
Toronto will play Baltimore in the first of a three-game series at 7:07 p.m. ET on Friday.
