The Toronto Blue Jays made a small trade on Wednesday morning, acquiring pitcher Connor Seabold from the Detroit Tigers for minor league lefty Juanmi Vasquez. As noted on social media, the team moved Jose Berrios to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the 40-man roster.

Berrios is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, one of several injury issues plaguing the Jays right now. In addition to him, Bowden Francis and Cody Ponce are also out for the year, and Anthony Santander might be. 

Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer, Addison Barger, Alejandro Kirk and Dylan Cease are also on the injured list.

The rash of injuries to pitchers is the main reason for bringing back Seabold, who was actually with the Jays in spring training.

Now 30 years old, Seabold was a third-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2017 MLB Draft. He played his college baseball at Cal State-Fullerton.

Seabold was traded from the Phillies to the Boston Red Sox during the COVID 2020 season as part of the deal that sent Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman to Philly. Nick Pivetta also went to the Red Sox, and he ended up being a mainstay for Boston through 2024 before leaving for the San Diego Padres

Seabold, on the other hand, struggled, going just 0-4 over two seasons with a 10.55 ERA. After Boston, he made 27 appearances for the 2023 Colorado Rockies, going 1-7 with a 7.52.

He resurfaced in 2025 with the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves, going 0-0 with a 4.35 ERA.

He has been better in 2026, going 1-0 with a 3.45 ERA for the Tigers in 11 appearances. He's struck out 14 batters in 15.2 innings.

For starters: The familiarity can't be ignored. Seabold was with the Jays in the spring, pitching to a 6.75 ERA in six Grapefruit League appearances, but he knows the staff and his teammates.

Furthermore, he can serve as a bulk option for manager John Schneider, who has to figure out how to cover innings in lieu of all the injuries. Cease went on the injured list earlier this week and the team is down to just Trey Yesavage and Kevin Gausman from its original rotation.

Spencer Miles has been serving as a bulk reliever and Patrick Corbin, signed after the season began, has provided steady innings.
