David Butler II-USA TODAY SportsThe Blue Jays began play in 1977, so it's hard to believe it took them a decade to get their first Gold Glove winner, but Fernandez was certainly a special defender at the shortstop position.
The five Gold Glove nominees that the Blue Jays have are tied for the most in baseball alongside the Chicago Cubs. Despite the individual recognition, the Jays actually had the most errors in the American League this season (99).
While the offensive issues are certainly at the forefront of Toronto's problems in 2026, the defensive woes should not be ignored heading into a crucial offseason.

--The Blue Jays need to be 40-man roster compliant by Nov. 2 (Tuesday), which is when 40-man rosters need to be set heading into the offseason. Toronto currently has 38 players on the 40-man roster, which means it has two open spots. As other teams trim their rosters, the Jays will be able to add if they want.
--The Blue Jays also have until Tuesday to make decisions on Myles Straw's contract option as well if they want to issue a qualifying offer to Shane Bieber. The QO for this season is around $23 million. Bieber ended the year on the injured list with a shoulder issue.
