The Toronto Blue Jays' injury troubles seem to be taking a turn for the better.

Starting pitcher and ace Dylan Cease returned to the team for a start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, in which the Jays won 3-2.

Toronto will see another starting pitcher, Max Scherzer, return for the team's game against Philadelphia at 7:07 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

The Blue Jays will also get back their starting catcher, Alejandro Kirk, who's been out for two months with a left thumb fracture.

Kirk began a rehab assignment with the Singe-A Dunedin Blue Jays on June 3 and was reassigned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday. Kirk has played three of four rehab games at designated hitter and one at catcher.

There's been reports that Kirk could return to the team as soon as this weekend, but his impending return has left a question about the effect it would have on the roster.

Since Kirk has been out, the catching duties have been handled by Brandon Valenzuela and Tyler Heineman. The latter of the two is a 34-year-old veteran whereas the former is in the middle of his rookie season.

Mitch Bannon recently appeared on Sportsnet 590 and opined that he doesn't believe the team will carry three catchers going forward.

He also stated that the team could potentially opt for a DH/C duo between Kirk and Valenzuela.

For a comparison of the three catchers, Heineman has slashed .154/.205/.205 with a .410 OPS in 33 games and has hit a double and a home run with six RBIs.

Valenzuela has a slash line of .252/.336/.463 with a .799 OPS in 45 games and has hit five doubles and seven homers with 17 RBIs.

Kirk played just five games before landing on the shelf. He slashed .150/.227/.350 with a .577 OPS and hit a double and homer with two RBIs.

Despite his slow start to the season, Kirk, who was named to the All-Star game in 2025, was one of the team's most effective hitter last season and the playoffs.

In 2025, Kirk had a slash line of .282/.348/.421 with a .769 OPS in 130 games and has hit 18 doubles and 15 homers with 76 RBIs. In the postseason, which saw him slash .254/.349/.493 with an .842 OPS and hit two doubles and five homers with 13 RBIs.

If Kirk is in the lineup and is able to regain his '25 form, and Valenzuela is able to continue his strong rookie season, Toronto's lineup could see a significant uptick in offense.
