Is Yoan Moncada really a fit for the Jays?

According to a new report from Francys Romero, the Toronto Blue Jays are one of the teams showing interest in free agent third baseman Yoan Moncada.

    Per Romero on social media:

Several teams, including the Angels, Pirates, White Sox, and Blue Jays, have shown early interest in free-agent third baseman Yoan Moncada, per sources.

Despite thumb and knee issues, Moncada had a solid 2025 and could contribute even more next season among third basemen.

The Angels and White Sox are both in need of affordable players with high-upside, and the Pirates are looking to spend money and improve this offseason. All of those options make sense, but the Blue Jays are a more curious fit.

    Let's dive in:

    About Moncada

Now 30 years old, the Cuban infielder was once the No. 1 prospect in the game. A 10-year veteran of the Boston Red Sox, White Sox and Angels, he's a career .252 hitter with 105 home runs.

A switch-hitter who still has some of the former prospect luster, he's battled injuries for the last several years.

Moncada played 132 games in 2019, hitting .315 with 25 homers and 79 RBIs. He then played 52 games out of a possible 60 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but saw his numbers regress to .225 with six home runs.

After that? He hit .263 with 14 homers in 144 games. He hit just .212 in 104 games in 2022, and then he played just 92 games in 2023. He played only 12 games in 2024 and then played 84 in 2025. He hit .234 with 12 homers and 35 RBIs.

His power is not what it used to be, but last season's output was equivalent to a 20+ homer campaign over a full season.

Why this is curious for the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays do need one more bat, but Moncada is not the kind of player they've been linked to this offseason. Simply put, the Jays have been linked to players at the top of the market like Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette. Moncada is a nice player with potential for impact, but he isn't a sure thing like those players seem to be.

    Where is the opening?

As of today, the Blue Jays have Alejandro Kirk at catcher, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first and Andres Gimenez at shortstop. Daulton Varsho makes up one of the outfield spots, as does George Springer.

If the Blue Jays were to add an outfielder (like Tucker), they could play Addison Barger at third and Ernie Clement at second.

If they were to add an infielder (like Bichette), they could play him at second and Clement at third, with Barger in right.

If Moncada came in, he'd probably play third with Clement at second.

    Is this about leverage?

It certainly could be. Perhaps the Jays are trying to send a message to Bichette's camp that they'll move on unless his side really sits down at the negotiating table.
