The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to make up ground in the American League after dropping two contests in a three-game series against the New York Yankees over the weekend.

The Blue Jays fell to 34-38 on the season, 10 games behind the Yankees in the American League East and 1.5 games behind the Athletics for the final AL wild card spot.

Toronto dropped games two and three of the series on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and a large reason for the team's losses has to do with nagging injuries from two of its best players.

Superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. missed the final two games of the series due to back tightness. Shortstop Andres Gimenez was scratched from the lineup Sunday due to a sore wrist he suffered sliding into first place in game two Saturday.

Based on postgame comments made by Blue Jays manager John Schneider that were shared via "X" by the Athletic's Mitch Bannon, Guerrero's back felt better Sunday and he would've hit in the ninth inning if the game progressed a different way.

Per Schneider, Gimenez's injury impacts him more on the hitting side of things than fielding, and the off day will be "good for him."

Guerrero has slashed .280/.372/.366 with a .378 OPS in 68 games this season. He's hit 12 doubles and three home runs with 27 RBIs. 

Gimenez has had better power numbers than Guerrero this season, albeit worse pure hitting and on-base numbers.

Gimenez has slashed .222/.269/.351 with a .620 OPS this season in 68 games and has hit nine doubles, a triple and six homers with 30 RBIs this season.

The Blue Jays will have an opportunity to get back to winning ways with an upcoming series against the Boston Red Sox. The latter of the two teams will be entering the series with a 29-40 record and are in last place in the AL East.

If Guerrero and Gimenez are healthy, it would set Toronto up in a good place to take the series against Boston.

The two ailing hitters and the rest of the team could also be joined by reliever Yimi Garcia, who "has a shot" to join the team for the series against the Red Sox, per Bannon's reporting. Garcia has missed the entire season to this point due to arm surgery. He's been on a month-long rehab assignment with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays, Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays and Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
