The Blue Jays have acquired veteran right-hander Jameson Taillon from the Chicago Cubs.
On the eve of the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, which is Monday at 6 p.m. ET, the Toronto Blue Jays have made a minor - but intriguing - trade, acquiring veteran right-hander Jameson Taillon from the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
The Blue Jays announced the move themselves on social media.
Here's what you need to know, and what it could mean:
About Taillon
A 10-year veteran of the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees and Cubs, Taillon has gone 84-66 in his career with a 3.99 ERA. He enjoyed a 3.68 ERA last season in 23 starts with the Cubs, but this year has been a different story. In 15 starts with the Cubs, he went 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA.
Signed to a four-year deal before the 2023 season, Taillon is a free agent at the end of this season. He had been designated for assignment recently, which is what allowed for the Blue Jays to bring him in.

What it could mean
It feels likely that the Blue Jays are going to trade at least one of Kevin Gausman or Shane Bieber at the deadline, meaning that the team will have a deficit in the starting rotation. Presuming one or both of those moves go through, Taillon will be able to backfill the rotation for the rest of the year.
Gausman went 5.2 innings for the Blue Jays in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday as he made his probable last start in a Jays uniform. He signed with Toronto before the 2022 season and will go down as one of the best free agent signings in team history.
He helped the Blue Jays to the playoffs in 2022, 2023 and 2025, serving as an integral part of the group that got to Game 7 of the World Series last season.
Also on Taillon
Though he was born in the United States, Taillon is the son of Canadian parents. He has represented Canada twice at the World Baseball Classic and holds dual citzenship.
He played for Canada in the 2026 version of the event, helping the group get to the medal round for the first time.
Up next for Toronto
The Blue Jays will start a new series with the Houston Astros on Monday night in Houston. The Astros have gotten red-hot and have vaulted into first place in the American League West.
