The Blue Jays are still discussing and exploring options when it comes to Jose Berrios
The Toronto Blue Jays are still attempting to stay above water while managing the amount of injuries the team has suffered.
A large part of the Blue Jays' injuries have come on the pitching side of things. Five starters are either out or have missed time this season due to various ailments. One of the hurlers currently out is right-hander Jose Berrios.
Berrios is currently on the injured list due to a right elbow stress fracture. He was sent on a rehab assignment April 16 and made four rehab assignments, two with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays and another two with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
Berrios struggled on his rehab assignment and posted a 10.67 ERA and struck out 11 hitters in 14.1 innings pitched.
The 31-year-old righty recently visited renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister in Texas to undergo further testing for his elbow and explore next steps.
Based on comments made by Toronto manager John Schneider on Wednesday, the team doesn't have a concrete update on him yet.
According to Schneider's quotes, which were shared on "X" Berrios is still talking through a plan with doctors but there is expectation that he will spend some time down.
Including Berrios, the Blue Jays are currently without starters Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber.
The team is targeting a two-batter-up live bullpen for Bieber early next week while Scherzer was recently scheduled to receive a cortisone shot in his thumb.
Berrios spent the final two weeks of the regular season last year on the injured list due to a right elbow inflammation. He also was kept off the roster throughout the playoffs while the Blue Jays won their first American League pennant since 1993.
Berrios finished out '25 with a 4.17 ERA and fanned 138 hitters in 166 innings pitched across 31 appearances (30 starts).
Berrios was originally scheduled to move from the starting rotation to the bullpen but, after a lot of public frustration over the move, landed on the IL.
Berrios made three starts in spring training and appeared more willing to accept a different role with the team but his latest injury threw a wrench in those plans.
While Toronto figures out the plan for Berrios going forward, the major league club will look to avoid a sweep against their American League East rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays, in the third of a three-game series at 7:07 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The Blue Jays dropped the first two games of the series against the Rays by scores of 8-5 and 7-6 on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
