"The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to be aggressive in the free agent market" is a popular refrain through the first few weeks of the Major League Baseball offseason.
We've heard the Jays connected to Kyle Tucker for days now, and Jon Heyman of the New York Post adds that they could be a fit for Alex Bregman as well.
Bregman’s most obvious fit is the Red Sox. But the Jays, Tigers and possibly the Cubs are among other possibilities.
The Jays have been much more strongly connected to Tucker thus far, but the fit for Bregman is possible.
Now 31 years old, Bregman will turn 32 just after Opening Day in 2026. A 10-year veteran of the Houston Astros and Red Sox, he's a three-time All-Star, a Gold Glover, a Silver Slugger and a two-time World Series champion.
He dealt with a lower body injury this season in Boston which caused him to play only 114 games, but he continued to perform, hitting 18 home runs and bringing in 62. He hit .273 with a .360 on-base percentage, both in line with his career averages. He helped lead the Red Sox to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
Well, it kind of all starts with Bo Bichette, right?
For instance: If the Jays bring back Bichette to play shortstop, then you'd have to imagine that Andres Gimenez would play second base. Ernie Clement has been excellent at third base, and is a fan-favorite after his historic postseason, so would Toronto jettison his spot for Bregman?
The same issue would be true if the Jays wanted to put Gimenez at short and Bichette at second.
But if Bichette leaves, the possibilities open up. Toronto could put Bregman at second, or perhaps Clement could play there with Bregman going to third.
The Blue Jays were interested in Bregman last season before he ultimately signed in Boston.
Set to turn 29 years old before the start of next season, Tucker has been one of the best offensive players in the league for years now. Though he battled injury in 2025, he still hit .266 with 22 home runs, 73 RBIs and 25 stolen bases for the Chicago Cubs in 136 games. He helped the Cubs to a second-place finish in the National League Central and an appearance in the playoffs.
A lifetime .273 hitter with 147 homers, he's also an excellent defender. A four-time All-Star, he's won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger as well. He helped the Astros win the 2022 World Series, where he was teammates with Bregman for several years.
