Cody Ponce will be out for an extended period of time after exiting a game against the Colorado Rockies with an ACL sprain.
The Toronto Blue Jays' early-season injury troubles has progressed from bad to worse after a recent update.
Blue Jays starting pitcher Cody Ponce, who was signed to a three-year, $30 million deal this offseason, exited Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies with an apparent knee injury after trying to field a ground ball.
It was the first major league start since 2021 for Ponce, who spent four years pitching overseas in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters (2022-23), Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles (2024) and the Korean Baseball Organization with the Hanwha Eagles.
Ponce finished his first MLB start in four years with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. He walked one batter and allowed one earned run on one hit.
The Jays ultimately lost against the Rockies 14-5 for the former's first defeat of the season.
Ponce was named the KBO MVP in '25 before signing his contract with Toronto.
According to several reports, Monday is also likely Ponce's last major league start for an extended period of time.
According to a post on "X" from Sportsnet columnist Shi Davidi, Ponce has suffered a right ACL sprain and will miss "significant time" according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
The team is still waiting for more opinions before figuring out the timeline for return and next steps in recovery for Ponce.
The right-hander's injury is the latest in a string of them for Toronto, which begun the spring with several pitchers already dealing with ailments.
Starting pitcher Jose Berrios is currently out with a stress fracture in his throwing elbow, starter Shane Bieber is nursing right forearm fatigue and rookie phenom (and the Blue Jays top overall prospect) Trey Yesavage is dealing with a right shoulder impingement. All three starters are expected to return at some point this year.
In addition to the ailing starting rotation, the bullpen also hasn't been immune from the injury bug. Right-handed reliever Yimi Garcia is still rehabbing from offseason elbow surgery.
The Blue Jays entered this year with legitimate championship aspirations. They won their first American League pennant in 32 years last season and advanced all the way to Game 7 of the World Series before ultimately falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in extra innings.
Toronto will wait to see if the injury to Ponce is season-ending. But regardless, the Blue Jays are now in a position where they have to be creative with the starting rotation in the immediate future.
