Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was scratched from Tuesday's game against the New York Mets.
The Toronto Blue Jays dropped their seventh game in the last eight contests on Tuesday night, losing 3-0 against the New York Mets at Rogers Centre.
With the loss, Toronto is now 40-46 on the season. They remain in third place in the American League East. The Mets are now 36-50, which is last in the National League East. Both of these teams are in the running for the most disappointing team in the entire sport.
Nolan McLean dazzled over six innings for New York, giving up no runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out seven, improving to 5-5 with a 3.78 ERA. Kevin Gausman was the tough-luck loser, as he gave up just one earned run on five hits over six innings. He struck out seven in falling to 4-7 with a 4.19 ERA.
Offense was clearly tough to come by for the Jays, but it was made tougher right before game time when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was scratched with back tightness. After the game, manager John Schneider said he thinks Guerrero will be OK on Wednesday. He also believes he's close to a turnaround at the plate, which is something the Jays desperately need.
Signed to a 14-year contract in 2025, Guerrero is hitting a respectable .268, but he has just four home runs, which is on pace to be the fewest in a full season of his career. He has a .347 on-base percentage and 34 RBIs, also on pace to be his lowest full season total.
For comparison, Guerrero averages 29 homers and 96 RBIs. He has two seasons over 100 RBIs on his resume as well.
A five-time All-Star, Guerrero is also a two-time Silver Slugger, a Gold Glover and an ALCS MVP. He was the critical piece in Toronto's lineup during last season's run to the World Series.

The Jays and Mets will play again on Wednesday afternoon as part of "Canada Day" at Rogers Centre. First pitch is set for 3:07 p.m. ET. Right-hander Freddy Peralta will take the mound for New York. He was acquired by the Mets this past offseason in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Blue Jays have not announced a starter as of this posting. Patrick Corbin is being moved to the bullpen and Spencer Miles could play a role as a bulk reliever.
