Toronto remains just one game back of the Cleveland Guardians in the wild card race.

The Toronto Blue Jays routed the Baltimore Orioles 8-1 on Sunday afternoon, moving back to an even .500 at 75-75.

With 12 games to play in the regular season, the Jays are just one game back of the Cleveland Guardians in the battle for the third and final wild card spot.

They are trying to make the playoffs for the second straight season, which would be a nice follow up to last year's World Series run.

And now, it looks like the Jays are going to have some added help for the final stretch run. After Sunday's game, it was announced that starting pitcher Trey Yesavage will make a rehab start at Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

If all goes well, he could return the following Monday (Sept. 21). He's been on the injured list since early August with a knee problem.

Drafted in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of East Carolina, Yesavage shot through the minor league ranks in 2025, debuting with the Blue Jays in September and playing a critical role in the team's run to the World Series.

This season, he began the year on the injured list with a shoulder impingement, but has rebounded to go 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA through 18 starts. He's struck out 91 batters in 93.2 innings. He figures to pair with Dylan Cease and Jose Soriano to make up the core of the team's rotation in 2027.

Yesavage's dual-injury woes are just a small piece of a hugely frustrating season for Toronto pitching: Jose Berrios and Bowden Francis have missed the entire season with Tommy John surgery and Cody Ponce, signed to a three-year deal in the offseason, made just one start before tearing his Achilles.

On top of that: Max Scherzer, Cease, Yesavage, Shane Bieber and Patrick Corbin have all spent time on the injured list. Yesavage, Scherzer, and Bieber have all been there multiple times, as indicated above.

Up next for Toronto

The Blue Jays will kick off a new series with the Detroit Tigers on Monday night at Rogers Centre. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. ET as Soriano pitches against the electric Troy Melton.

Soriano is 12-7 with a 3.48 ERA between the Los Angeles Angels and Blue Jays. Melton is 8-4 with a 2.42 ERA in his first full season as a starter. He has a fastball in the upper-90s.
