The Jays finally have an answer on Jose Berrios, and they have additional moves coming before game two of a weekend series with the Detroit Tigers.

For better or worse, the Toronto Blue Jays finally got a resolution on right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios on Saturday morning, announcing that he's going to have surgery to continue to repair the stress fracture he's had in his pitching elbow.

Hazel Mae of Sportsnet indicates that there is also concern for the ligaments in his elbow as well, but nothing is known officially there yet.

Per Mae on social media:

Jose Berrios to have surgery Wednesday performed by Dr. Meister.

Repair existing injury (stress fracture on elbow).

There is some concern about ligament - they’ll determine whether he’s done for season whether ligament needs repairing.

The Berrios file

Now 31 years old, Berrios is a 10-year veteran of the Minnesota Twins and Blue Jays. A two-time All-Star, he's 108-82 lifetime with a 4.08 ERA.

After a solid season in 2024, he regressed in 2025, going 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA. His ERA was better than his FIP (4.65), suggesting that some regression to the mean was possible, but now it's a question of whether or not he'll get on the mound at all.

Berrios has been the picture of durability since getting to the majors in 2016. He's made 30 starts or more in every full season since 2018 and also made a full 12-start workload in the COVID-shortened 2020 season (60 games).

He even made 25 appearances in 2017 once he became a major league regular with Minnesota.

He's under contract through 2028.

This injury is just the latest to a Toronto pitching staff that is also out Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer and Bowden Francis, the latter of which is out for the year.

How Toronto handles things moving forward

Since the Blue Jays haven't had Berrios all season, it's really just a matter of keeping on as they have been. Patrick Corbin figures to get a longer rope in the rotation and the team will work to get Bieber and Scherzer back from their respective issues.

Ben Nicholson-Smith reports that Adam Macko is with the team in Detroit and they may activate him to help cover for some ailing relievers.

Up next

The Jays and Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. ET. The Blue Jays will utilize an opener in left-hander Mason Fluharty before likely giving way to Rule-5 Draft choice Spencer Miles.

The Tigers will send former No. 1 overall draft pick Casey Mize to the mound, as he's being activated off the injured list.

He's made six starts this season, going 2-2 with a solid 2.90 ERA. Not a hard thrower, he has 35 strikeouts in 31 innings. He was an All-Star in 2025.

The Blue Jays are 19-25.
