The Blue Jays are now officially ready for the start of the 2027 league year.
With a flurry of roster moves and decisions, the Toronto Blue Jays are now ready for the 2027 league year.
With all teams having made moves to get into 40-man roster compliance ahead of Monday's 5 p.m. ET deadline, the league can now start its official business for next year. That business can last about one month until the league is thrown into a probable deep freeze on Dec. 2 when the (likely) MLB lockout takes hold.
Here's what you need to know.
Blue Jays don't use the qualifying offer
We thought there was a chance that Shane Bieber could have been given the one-year, $23-ish million deal, but he was not. The Blue Jays could look to bring him back on a smaller deal, but they evidently didn't want to risk that he would accept this offer.
Eight players were given the qualifying offer by their teams, including Randy Arozarena (Mariners) and Seiya Suzuki (Cubs). If the Blue Jays sign any of these eight players, they'll have to forfeit a draft pick.
Jays decline option on Myles Straw
We thought this was likely also, and it played out just how we thought. Straw, 31, spent the last two years in Toronto.
A solid contributor for the American League champion Jays in 2025, he hit .262 in 299 plate appearances with 12 stolen bases. A solid clubhouse presence and a still solid defender, he hit .241 in 330 plate appearances in 2026. He probably played more than initially expected given the season-long injury to Anthony Santander and the mostly season-long injury to Addison Barger.
The Blue Jays will give him a $1.75 million buyout and they could also look to bring him back at a smaller contract number.
Several players reinstated from injured list
Barger, Santander, Jonatan Clase, Jose Berrios, Jake Bloss, Bowden Francis and Cody Ponce are now back on the 40-man roster.

Rudy Martin Jr., who was recently designated for assignment, has elected free agency. Right-handed pitcher CJ Van Eyk was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Also need to know
With the new league now here, the Blue Jays are free to negotiate with all free agents. They'll have just that one month before things (probably) shut down, so there could be a flurry of activity on the free agent front. The Blue Jays are reportedly interested in multiple players from Japan, and that situation got more murky on Monday.
