Cayro Hazel has spent the last two years playing in the Dutch Major League.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly come to terms with Dutch infielder Cayro Hazel, according to Francys Romero. The deal is worth $80,000.

Hazel is just 18 years old, but he has already spent parts of two seasons playing in the Dutch Major Leagues. In 30 games at the age of 17 in 2025, he hit .266 with 12 RBIs and two stolen bases. In 18 games this past season, he hit .181 with three RBIs and five doubles.

As noted by Romero, he profiles as a utility infielder and a contact hitter.

He'll enter the Blue Jays system and will clearly enter the minor leagues in 2027, though it's unclear exactly where Toronto will want to start him. Having professional experience is certainly a leg up, and Hazel profiled as more than seven years younger than the average player in the Dutch league.

Hazel is from the Netherlands, not from Curacao, which is a constituent country of the Netherlands. Curacao has produced several prominent big leaguers, including Ozzie Albies, Andruw Jones, Andrelton Simmons and Ceddanne Rafaela.

About the Jays farm system

The Blue Jays farm system is not particularly well-regarded, though it does feature two Top-100 prospects, per MLB Pipeline. JoJo Parker is one of the top young players in professional baseball, and he played at Single-A and High-A this season. The team traded away fellow Top 100 prospect Arjun Nimmala to the Los Angeles Angels in the deal that netted them Jose Soriano.

Other international signing news

The International Signing Period typically takes place in January, and teams all have a fresh batch of money to spend then. However, this year's signing period is up in the air because of Collective Bargaining Agreement issues. If the league is in a lockout in January, there will be no signing period until the lockout is over, presumably. And, some of the rules around the signing period could change as well.

One reminder: If there is a lockout, Minor League Baseball still happens. So that means that Hazel would be able to play games next season.

As for the Jays...

While the rest of baseball is focused on the playoffs, the Blue Jays are hard at work in the offseason. They can make little moves and waiver claims, but nothing big can really happen until the conclusion of the World Series. At that point, five days after the World Series ends, free agency can begin.

The CBA runs out on Dec. 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET, which is when a lockout would start.
