The most experienced and veteran pitcher on the Toronto Blue Jays is working his way back from injury for the second time this season.

Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer began a rehab assignment July 3 with the High-A Vancouver Canadians after being placed on the 15-day injured list June 17 (retroactive to June 14) due to back spasms.

In Scherzer's outing with the High-A club, he struck out three batters, walked two and allowed two earned runs on three hits in three innings of work.

On Monday, it was announced that Scherzer's next rehab start will take place with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in a game against the Scranton/Wilkes-Baire RailRiders on Wednesday, five days after his previous rehab outing with the Canadians.

This is Scherzer's second time on the injured list this season. He was previously out from April 25-June 10 due to a combination of right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.

The 41-year-old hurler has made a total of three rehab outings in the minor leagues this season. In three starts, the eight-time All-Star has posted a 4.66 ERA and has fanned 12 batters in 9.2 innings of work.

In between his two IL stints, Scherzer has a 10.23 ERA and has struck out 14 hitters in 22 innings of work in six starts.

Scherzer was brought back by the Blue Jays this spring on a one-year, $3 million contract after spending last year with the team.

Toronto brought back Scherzer this spring amidst a litany of injuries to the rest of the starting rotation.

The Blue Jays' group of starters still aren't as healthy as they could be. Right-handed starters Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce are both out for the season.

In Scherzer's absence, Toronto's starting rotation is currently comprised of Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage and Patrick Corbin.

The Blue Jays have recently explored using Corbin out of the bullpen and seem to be considering moving reliever Spencer Miles in a starting role.

If Scherzer returns healthy and has a similar form to what he had before going on the IL a second time, Toronto might end up considering moving on from the future National Baseball Hall of Famer and consider rolling with either Corbin or Miles for the fifth and final rotation spot.

Miles has a 2.83 ERA this season with 55 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched across 24 appearances (two starts).
