After getting to the World Series in 2025 and signing a quartet of high-priced free agents this offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays are plenty focused on the present.
However, as they celebrate their 50th season in 2026, the Jays are also focused on honoring the past.
Toronto announced on Monday that it will build a commemorative statue outside Rogers Centre this season. It will be placed between Gates 5 and 6 and will feature Joe Carter and his iconic World Series winning home run from 1993.
The Jays won the title in both 1992 and 1993, so there's sure to be some mention of both titles on or near the statue. The team told Carter of the plans in June of 2025 and the statue will be unveiled on July 18 of this year.
You can see the video and his reaction below:
A 16-year veteran, Carter spent seven years in Toronto, serving as a key member of both World Series teams. His walk-off home run in Game 6 of the 1993 series is one of the biggest hits in baseball history.
He had six postseason home runs for his career to go along with 20 RBIs. He was a .252 hitter in October and was also a five-time All-Star for his career. He also won two Silver Slugger Awards.
A career .259 hitter, he had 396 home runs and 231 stolen bases. He had six seasons of 30 home runs or more and was one of the first true position player stars for the Jays, paving the way for the likes of Carlos Delgado, Vernon Wells and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He paired with George Bell to make quite a tandem at the beginning of his Jays tenure.
--Because of insurance issues, it's unclear if Jays starter Jose Berrios will be able to compete in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. He ended the season on the injured list in 2025 and that's a major problem for WBC insurance purposes. Insurance has been an issue for several players and several nations. Recently, Puerto Rico said they may have to consider dropping out of the tournament entirely.
--Kazuma Okamoto (Japan), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Dominican Republic), Ernie Clement (USA), Yariel Rodriguez (Cuba) and Alejandro Kirk (Mexico) are all confirmed as playing. Final rosters come out on Thursday.
--The Blue Jays were mentioned as a possible fit for free agent Framber Valdez. Does that make sense? We discussed here.
