After selecting Cole Carlon in the first round of the MLB Draft, the Blue Jays made two more selections on day one.
After selecting left-handed pitcher Cole Carlon from Arizona State with their first pick in the MLB Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays made two more selections on Day 1, selecting infielder Ryan Cooney from Oregon and high school catcher Will Brick. Brick is a commit to Mississippi State.
About Cooney
A junior from Portland, Ore., Cooney was a first-team All-Big 10 selection in 2025. He was also solid in 2026, hitting .331 in total with eight homers, 43 RBIs and a .524 slugging percentage. He also had a .420 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases.
As for Brick
Baseball America had him as the top-ranked high school catcher, ranking him No. 61 in their database of 500 draft-eligible players.
Why the Blue Jays didn't have a true first-round pick
By virtue of finishing as the runner-up in the World Series, the Blue Jays would have picked at No. 29 in the draft, but because they overspent the second level of the competitive balance tax, they were docked 10 spots to No. 39.
The Blue Jays also lost their second-round pick as a result of signing Dylan Cease, who came with a qualifying offer.
How the slot bonus impacts these selections
The Blue Jays entered the draft with the second-lowest amount of slot money, meaning they can't really afford to take too many risks in the draft. Taking college players without the real leverage to go back to college was the safe route, but they bucked that with the pick of Brick.
We'll see if they can maneuver enough money to buy him out of his Mississippi State commitment.
For what it's worth, the Blue Jays expect him to sign.
