Boston Red Sox slugger Adam Duvall has been named the American League Player of the Week after a dominant weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles. He went 8-14 with three doubles and two home runs and now leads the major leagues in RBI with eight.
Duvall homered twice on Saturday, including one of them being a walk-off to give the Sox their first win of the season.
The weekly award is great recognition for Duvall, who is in his first year with the Red Sox after signing a one-year deal this offseason.
Duvall is attempting to bounce-back from a down year in Atlanta last year, where he hit just 12 home runs in 86 games. The Red Sox are hoping this weekend's output will serve as a pre-cursor to him rediscovering his 2021 form, where he hit 38 homers and drove in 113 with the Marlins and Braves. He was acquired by the Braves near the trade deadline and helped them win the World Series that year.
When the Red Sox brought in Duvall, there was hope that he could become the next Hunter Renfroe for the team. Renfroe was brought in in 2021 and hit 30 homers and brought in 96 runs. He only spent one year in Boston before being traded to Milwaukee before the 2022 season.
This years Red Sox features a powerful outfield in general, with Duvall being flanked by Alex Verdugo and Japanese outfielder Masataka Yoshida, who hit 21 home runs last year in the Nippon Professional Baseball League.
The Red Sox open up a series with the Pirates tonight in Boston. First pitch is 7:10 p.m. ET.
