The Braves were defeated on Wednesday by the Red Sox.
The Atlanta Braves were defeated 8-0 by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. After earning a 7-6 win on Tuesday in Boston, the Braves were unable to get anything going on Wednesday. The series is now tied 1-1 heading into Thursday's contest. In the game, Bryce Elder struggled on the mound.
Elder has performed well for most of the season. On Wednesday, however, the right-handed hurler allowed six runs (five earned) across 3.1 innings of work on the mound. He also gave up nine hits while only recording one strikeout.
The 27-year-old has still enjoyed a strong season. He now holds a 2.50 ERA across 12 total outings. Elder has also recorded 61 strikeouts in 72 innings of work.
The Braves' bullpen ended up surrendering two more runs in the defeat. The good news is that Carlos Carrasco helped to save the bullpen.
As mentioned, Elder only worked 3.1 innings. Dylan Dodd followed his effort with 0.2 scoreless innings. Carrasco then entered the game and allowed two runs across four innings on the mound. The Braves did not have to use too many relievers, so the bullpen should still be fresh for Thursday's ball game.
Offensively, Atlanta only recorded five total hits in the defeat. Jorge Mateo led the way with two hits. Overall, though, the Braves lineup did not find much success against Connelly Early and Red Sox pitching.
Braves Still in a Good Position Overall Despite Loss to Red Sox
At 37-19, Atlanta still leads the National League East standings. The Braves are eight games ahead of the second place Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta also has the best record in the league, although the 35-20 Los Angeles Dodgers are not far behind. The Dodgers have yet to play their game on Wednesday, so LA could get even closer by Thursday.
Nevertheless, the Braves surely feel comfortable about their current position. They have still played a quality brand of baseball throughout the 2026 campaign.
On Thursday, Chris Sale (7-3, 1.89 ERA) will get the ball for Atlanta. The Braves' ace will look to help his ball club get back on track against his former team. The Red Sox will send Payton Tolle (2-2, 2.45 ERA) to the mound.
It should be a good game between the teams. First pitch for the final contest of the series between the Braves and Red Sox is scheduled for 4:10 PM EST at Fenway Park in Boston.
