Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris suffered an injury on Tuesday.
Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris is having an excellent season in his fifth year with the organization. Unfortunately, injuries have continued to play a role in disrupting his momentum.
Harris dealt with a left quad strain earlier this season that forced him to miss plenty of time and kept him out of center field for a week. Fortunately, it appeared he had gotten past that.
One issue he has not gotten past is lower back tightness, which flared up again during Tuesday's game against the San Francisco Giants forcing him to leave the game early.
"OF Michael Harris II was removed from tonight's game due to lower back tightness," the team wrote on X.
This is not the first time the back has been a problem. Harris dealt with lower back tightness earlier in June, forcing him to leave a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates and sit out of the starting lineup for two straight days afterward.
Prior to his early exit Tuesday, Harris had collected a single in his lone plate appearance. Mauricio Dubon took over in center field in his place, and if the Braves are forced to place Harris on the injured list, Dubon would likely take over as the everyday option in the outfield.
The hope is that is not the case, because losing Harris for any stretch would be a significant blow given what he has meant to this team. It would also compound an already concerning outfield situation, with superstar right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. currently sidelined on the injured list as well.
Harris' bat had fallen off after his debut season in 2022, when he won National League Rookie of the Year. This year, though, it has fully returned, and when you combine that with the fact that he is one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball, you get an elite player.
Across 68 games, the 25-year-old has posted a .303 batting average, .849 OPS, 14 home runs and 41 RBIs, and he is a huge reason the Braves sit first in the NL East with a 46-25 record.
Manager Walt Weiss will likely provide another update on his condition on Wednesday. For a team with World Series aspirations, keeping Harris healthy the rest of the way is essential. Harris is likely on his way toward earning his first career All-Star selection this year. The hope is that he will be able to play in it.
