Braves fans will want to hear this.

The Atlanta Braves' decision to sign reliever Robert Suarez in MLB free agency could be one of the best and most underrated moves of the offseason. While fans are wondering if Atlanta will address its starting rotation, there is no question that the team answered questions in the bullpen. Not only did they bring Raisel Iglesias back as the closer, but they brought Suarez in as well.

Suarez has closing experience, but he will pitch in the 8th inning for Atlanta most of the time. As a result, he is expected to instantly become one of the best setup men in the sport.

Braves reporter Grant McAuley recently provided an assessment of Suarez's recent spring training outing, and it is something that fans will want to read.

"New Braves reliever Robert Suarez looked pretty dominant in his Spring debut on Friday against Boston, hitting 100 mph multiple times with a strikeout in a 16-pitch scoreless inning," McAuley wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

It was indeed a strong spring training debut for the right-handed pitcher. Atlanta's bullpen played a pivotal role in the team's 2021 World Series run, and the ball club may be implementing a similar strategy in 2026.

With Iglesias and Suarez leading the way, there is reason to have legitimate confidence in the 2026 Braves' relief core.

Robert Suarez's Potential Impact on Braves

Suarez, 35, led the league in saves last season with the San Diego Padres, as he recorded a mark of 40. Suarez saved 36 games in 2024. He has been one of the best closers in the game over the past couple of years.

Perhaps seeing Suarez sign with a team where he will not be the closer was surprising. Suarez is set to make a crucial impact in the bullpen, though. He will likely receive some closing opportunities as well. For example, if Iglesias is used on back-to-back days, then Suarez could receive the 9th inning on a third day.

Having Suarez as a backup closer in a sense while also being the go-to setup man is a dream-come-true for the Braves. As long as he makes the adjustment without too much trouble, Suarez could be a true difference-maker in Atlanta this year.

Will the Braves' bullpen lead them to another World Series run? There is plenty of competition in the National League, but a strong relief core will only help matters. For a Braves ball club that is looking to bounce back after a down 2025 campaign, Robert Suarez will be an X-factor out of the bullpen.
