The Atlanta Braves could make a trade to improve up the middle.
The Atlanta Braves could revisit their interest in Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager this offseason. MLB Network reporter Joel Sherman said Atlanta checked in on the two-time World Series champion last winter and could pursue him again as the Braves look to address their shortstop situation.
"A lot of teams checking in on Seager last offseason. I believe Atlanta was one of those teams. I wouldn't be surprised if they did again," Sherman said.
Atlanta has struggled to find a consistent answer at shortstop since Dansby Swanson left after the 2022 season. Ha-Seong Kim was supposed to help stabilize the position this year after signing a one-year, $20 million deal, but injuries limited his availability.
He also struggled when on the field. Kim finished the 2026 regular season with a .116 average, no home runs and a .359 OPS in 129 at-bats. If he is brought back, it certainly would not be for $20 million again.
The Braves leaned on Mauricio Dubon and other options to fill the gap. Jim Jarvis even earned some playing time in the second half.
After missing the postseason in 2025, Atlanta returned to October in 2026 but fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS.
Seager would be a huge offensive upgrade if Atlanta can acquire him. The 32-year-old hit .271 with a .373 on-base percentage and .736 OPS, along with 20 home runs and 51 RBIs across 102 games for Texas.
Availability is a concern though. Seager played just 102 games last season and has dealt with injuries, including an operation on his right sports hernia in 2024. His recent health history makes him a risk even with the offensive upside.
The contract would be another major consideration. Seager is signed through 2031 and is owed $31.5 million annually over the remaining years of his deal. Atlanta would need to weigh that commitment against the cost of surrendering prospects in a trade.
Seager also has a full no-trade clause, which could complicate negotiations if Atlanta is among the teams he can block.
Seager won World Series MVP honors with the Dodgers in 2020 and the Rangers in 2023, giving him experience in two championship runs. That pedigree would fit a Braves team trying to get back to the World Series.
For now, Atlanta's interest remains a possibility rather than a confirmed pursuit. Sherman said he would not be surprised if the Braves checked in again, but no deal has been reported. The question is whether Atlanta is willing to take on Seager's contract and injury risk to solve its shortstop problem.
