Braves Make Trade With Rays Amid MLB Offseason cover image

The Atlanta Braves have completed a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Atlanta Braves continued to shuffle their 40-man roster on Monday, announcing a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays that sent left-hander Ken Waldichuk and infielder Brett Wisely to Tampa Bay. In return, Atlanta will receive cash considerations or a player to be named later, according to the team’s official statement on X.

For the Braves, the move reflects the reality of a crowded roster and the need to create flexibility as the offseason progresses. Both Waldichuk and Wisely had recently been designated for assignment, leaving Atlanta with the choice of either losing them on waivers or finding value through a trade. By striking a deal with the Rays, the Braves ensured they would at least recoup something for two players who no longer fit into their immediate plans.

Waldichuk, once a promising prospect, arrived in Atlanta after being claimed off waivers from the Athletics. His career has been marked by flashes of potential but also inconsistency, including a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery. While the Braves briefly held him as depth, the re-signing of reliever Tyler Kinley on a one-year deal pushed Waldichuk off the roster. Tampa Bay, known for taking chances on arms with upside, will now attempt to get him back on track.

Wisely’s path was similar. Claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants last September, he offered defensive versatility across the infield and outfield. However, Atlanta’s claim of right-hander George Soriano from the Baltimore Orioles last week forced Wisely to be designated for assignment. Rather than risk losing him outright, the Braves packaged him with Waldichuk in this deal. The Rays, who have been searching for infield depth after moving on from several pieces in recent months, will give Wisely another opportunity.

For Atlanta, the trade is less about the players leaving and more about maintaining roster flexibility as the club continues to shape its team for 2026. The Braves have already been active this winter, adding bullpen arms and exploring ways to strengthen their rotation. With a strong core already in place, the front office has prioritized keeping options open for future moves rather than holding onto fringe roster pieces.

While Waldichuk and Wisely may find new life in Tampa Bay, the Braves will look ahead to bigger decisions as spring training approaches. Whether the return is cash or a player to be named later, Atlanta’s focus remains on maximizing value and ensuring the roster is positioned for another run at the postseason.
