Atlanta keeps on rolling.
The Atlanta Braves became the first team in baseball to reach 30 wins on Wednesday night, and it happened the way so many of their victories have this season.
Down to the late innings, needing somebody to come through, and getting it from a name most casual fans would not recognize.
Mauricio Dubón hammered a two-run homer in the eighth inning to break open a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs at Truist Park, pushing Atlanta's record to 30-13.
It was tied at one going into the bottom of the eighth after Drake Baldwin and Nico Hoerner had traded solo shots earlier in the game.
Mike Yastrzemski came off the bench as a pinch-hitter and ripped a go-ahead double that scored Michael Harris II, and then Dubón put it away by sending one into the Chicago bullpen.
Dubón Credits Weiss For The Confidence
What Dubón said after the game told the bigger story.
He gave credit to first-year manager Walt Weiss for leaving him in the lineup against reliever Phil Maton instead of pulling him for a pinch-hitter, something he said would have happened on his previous teams.
"In years past for me, I would've gotten pinch-hit right there and they wouldn't let me hit," Dubón said with a smile. "But I ended up putting up a two-run homer. I think it's that confidence he gives you when you're playing."
Atlanta acquired Dubón from the Houston Astros this past offseason for Nick Allen.
He started the year as the everyday shortstop while Ha-Seong Kim recovered from finger surgery, and now that Kim is back, Dubón has slid over to the outfield and taken on leadoff duties while Ronald Acuña Jr. sits on the injured list.
Wherever the Braves need him, he goes.
"I'm trying to prove people wrong," he said, breaking into a satisfied grin.
Role Players Fueling Atlanta's Hot Start
That mentality is showing up all over the Braves roster right now.
Atlanta has gotten big contributions from players who are not household names, and it is a huge reason the club is pulling away in the National League East.
Matt Olson has been swinging at an MVP level, Drake Baldwin keeps building on his strong rookie campaign, and guys like Dubón, Yastrzemski and Dominic Smith keep coming through in moments where roster depth makes the difference.
The bullpen earned its share of the credit on Wednesday too.
Four relievers combined for four scoreless innings and held Chicago to just four singles on the night.
Dubón's blast was his third homer of the season.
He is hitting .264 with 14 RBIs and a .734 OPS while bouncing between positions for a team that is 17 games over .500 before Memorial Day.
The Braves go for the sweep on Thursday with Chris Sale on the mound.
