The Atlanta Braves have already had a busy MLB offseason, bringing in players such as reliever Robert Suarez and outfielder Mike Yastrzemski in addition to re-signing shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. One MLB insider believes the Braves could end up making more moves, though. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently made an appearance on Foul Territory and called the Braves a free agency "dark horse."
"Atlanta is kind of a dark horse," Nightengale said. "They still have money to spend."
While Atlanta is not a small-market, the Braves do not often find themselves competing for the top free agents. Teams such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers are the primary suitors for the highest paid guys on a consistent basis. However, it seems as if Nightengale is hinting that the Braves could make some more noise in free agency.
Bo Bichette -- who most recently played with the Toronto Blue Jays -- has been discussed as a candidate for the Braves. While Kim is expected to handle shortstop duties, Bichette is rumored to be willing to move to second base if necessary.
Atlanta may want to pursue more pitching as well. While the bullpen appears to be strong with Raisel Iglesias and Suarez leading the way, another hurler or two for the starting rotation would not hurt. Framber Valdez and Zac Gallen are among the available starting pitchers still remaining in free agency.
The Braves will also likely continue to make moves to improve their overall depth. When it comes to star players, though, Bichette and/or a pitcher are probably the most realistic options. Star outfielders such as Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger are free agents as well, but the Braves have not been consistently linked to either slugger.
There is still plenty of time in the offseason for Atlanta to further strengthen its roster. The Braves may have extra motivation to spend money this offseason following their disappointing 2025 season. Suarez and Kim have been the biggest signings for the Braves up to this point, but one has to wonder if Atlanta will sign at least one more star before the 2026 MLB season gets underway.
Only time will tell, but the Braves are certainly becoming one of the most intriguing teams to follow in free agency as the MLB offseason moves forward.
