Are Braves Still in the Conversation to Sign Bo Bichette? cover image

Bo Bichette is among the best remaining free agents, but will the Braves sign him?

Earlier in the offseason, the Atlanta Braves were seemingly a potential fit for free agent shortstop Bo Bichette. While Atlanta re-signed Ha-Seong Kim, the idea of moving Bichette to second base given the uncertainty around Ozzie Albies' long-term future with the team was mentioned. However, the latest report from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com did not mention the Braves as a suitor for Bichette.

A reunion with the Toronto Blue Jays was mentioned, while the Boston Red Sox also reportedly have interest in the infielder. While the Braves' absence from the report certainly does not completely eliminate them from the Bichette sweepstakes, it does suggest that perhaps Atlanta is not currently seriously pursuing him.

Could the Braves still end up signing Bichette? Sure, especially since he is reportedly willing to move to second base if necessary. If Bichette was only focused on shortstop, then Atlanta would not make sense. The second base catch of it all keeps the Braves linked to him from a logical standpoint -- but it remains to be seen if there is interest from the team at the moment.

What the Braves Infield Currently Looks Like

The Braves' infield could be among the best in the sport. Slugging first baseman Matt Olson and third baseman Austin Riley will handle the corner infield spots. Kim and Albies are expected to take care of business in the middle infield.

That's a strong infield without question. There is not any legitimate need to go out and sign Bichette right now. However, questions have swirled around Albies' long-term future with Atlanta. A contract extension has yet to come to fruition, so Albies could emerge as a trade candidate in the future.

Still, it seems as if Bichette probably won't be heading to Atlanta. The Braves are rarely linked to the stop stars in free agency, as they often tend to prefer signing players who are already on the roster to long-term extensions.

Nevertheless, the Braves should not be completely ruled out of the Bichette sweepstakes. Anything can happen as the offseason moves forward. However, the Blue Jays and Red Sox seem to be the top suitors, while ball clubs like the Los Angeles Dodgers also cannot be ignored.

As for the Braves, their infield will be in a respectable situation regardless of where Bo Bichette ultimately signs. Still, fans would surely love to see the team sign a superstar in free agency.
