The Braves could sign Bo Bichette as a second baseman.
The Atlanta Braves recently agreed to re-sign Ha-Seong Kim, who is expected to handle everyday shortstop duties in 2026. Atlanta was previously linked to shortstop Bo Bichette in free agency, but the Kim signing initially made it seem unlikely that the Braves would pursue him. According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, however, Bichette is telling teams that he's open to moving to second base, per MLB Network.
If the Braves can sign Bichette as a second baseman, should they pursue the former Toronto Blue Jays star this offseason?
What About Ozzie Albies?
Albies is a multiple time All-Star who was once considered one of the best second baseman in the sport. Injures and underperformance have unfortunately defined Albies' past two seasons, though. At this point, there is an argument to be made for trading Albies.
Both Albies and Bichette feature All-Star ceilings. They are close in age as well, as Bichette is 27 and Albies is 28. Bichette has performed at a high level in recent years, while Albies has not been an All-Star since 2023, however.
In 2025, Bichette slashed .311/.357/.483 to go along with an .840 OPS, 18 home runs and 44 doubles. As for Albies, he hit just .240/.306/.365 while recording a .671 OPS, 16 home runs and 23 doubles.
Bichette's defense at shortstop is questionable, but he could become one of the better defensive second baseman in the sport. Albies' defense at second base has uncertainty.
While Albies is a good player, signing Bichette would provide an upgrade. Additionally, Albies' ceiling would still allow the Braves to receive a quality return in a potential trade.
Braves Should Sign Bo Bichette
Bichette would represent an offensive upgrade over Kim, but Kim is the better defensive shortstop. A middle infield duo of Kim and Bichette could be strong without question. Bichette's reported willingness to move to second base instantly makes the Braves a quality landing destination.
It remains to be seen if Atlanta will seriously pursue the 27-year-old in MLB free agency. Discussing a deal should be something the Braves consider at the very least. Atlanta wants to play well in 2026 after a disappointing 2025 season, and adding a star such as Bichette to their already impressive core of players would only help their current situation.
Signing Bo Bichette would certainly not be cheap, but it could prove to be a game-changing move for years to come.
