The Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Sunday during a spring training game. Pitching clearly told the story of the contest as evidenced by the low scoring affair. Veteran left-handed pitcher Jose Suarez started the game and performed well overall. Suarez ultimately recorded four shutout innings and three strikeouts.

Joel Payamps followed Suarez with one scoreless inning, while prospect JR Ritche turned in four shutout innings to close the game. Today, however, we are going to take a look at Suarez's case to make the Opening Day roster.

Suarez, 28, made his MLB debut in 2019 with the Los Angeles Angels. The fact is that he has endured ups and downs throughout his career. Overall, he has recorded a 5.30 career ERA.

After pitching with the Los Angeles Angels from 2019-2024, Suarez joined the Braves in 2025. He found success in Atlanta despite only appearing in seven games, as he had a 1.86 ERA.

He has clearly displayed promising signs during spring training as well. Additionally, Suarez is a versatile pitcher.

Suarez has appeared in 106 games, starting 62 of those contests. He can work in relief or as a starter. If he comes out of the bullpen, Suarez is a pitcher who can provide multiple innings. He's a terrific long-relief candidate.

Suarez can also be an opener if necessary. He can start games and pitch for a few innings. Or, Suarez can be a legitimate starting pitcher.

So, what is the decision the Braves are facing?

Atlanta needs to decide if Suarez will make the 2026 Opening Day roster. His official role will be determined as a result of that decision, but the role is not the current big decision. It will obviously play a factor in determining whether or not Suarez makes the team, though.

The Braves are dealing with starting pitching uncertainty. Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep are both expected to miss time with injuries. Suarez could end up being considered for the No. 5 rotation spot as a result.

If not, the bullpen remains a possibility. Having Suarez be able to work out of relief and give a few innings would certainly help Atlanta. 

For now, Jose Suarez is focused on trying to make the team. Opening Day is right around the corner, however, so the Braves will need to make a decision soon.
