Mauricio Dubon is approaching unrestricted free agency after one season with the Atlanta Braves.
The answer is yes. There is no reason to overthink it. The Atlanta Braves should bring Mauricio Dubon back. He played 153 games in 2026, moved around the field when needed and gave Atlanta a steady everyday option on a roster that dealt with plenty of injuries throughout the season.
Atlanta acquired Dubon from the Houston Astros in November 2025, sending infielder Nick Allen to Houston. The move gave the Braves a proven utility player with two Gold Gloves, won in 2023 and 2025. It also gave them a player who knows what it takes to win it all. Dubon was on the Astros in 2022 when they won a World Series title.
He opened the season as Atlanta's starting shortstop due to Ha-Seong Kim's injury, but his value grew beyond one position as the team worked through injuries and roster changes all year long.
Dubon hit .276 with a .321 on-base percentage and .720 OPS, adding 12 home runs, 73 RBIs and 66 runs scored. It was the most productive season of his 8-year career, and he delivered it while covering shortstop, second base and the outfield.
That kind of flexibility matters a ton for a club that simply cannot assume its lineup will stay healthy. Dubon was not an offensive star by any means, but a .720 OPS with 73 RBIs from a player who can cover multiple positions is incredibly useful. It is hard for teams to find players who can provide that much value, and it is hard to imagine any team needing a player like Dubon more than the Braves.
His postseason struggles should not erase that value. Dubon hit .192 with one RBI and no home runs in 26 at-bats across the Wild Card series and NLDS. A short October slump should not outweigh six months of regular-season work.
The Braves finished 94-68, won the National League East and reached the NLDS before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Their season showed just how important roster depth can be. Dubon's ability to step into different roles gave manager Walt Weiss options without forcing the club to make a major move every time a starter went down.
The financial side is the main question. Dubon made $6.1 million in 2026 and is set to reach free agency. A two-year deal would give Atlanta continuity without committing too far into his mid-30s.
The club should be careful with the price, but replacing his versatility would not necessarily be cheaper. If the price is reasonable, bringing him back should be a priority this offseason.
