The Milwaukee Brewers acquired right-handed reliever Joel Kuhnel from the Athletics for cash considerations.
The Milwaukee Brewers continued to address their pitching depth by acquiring veteran right-hander Joel Kuhnel from the Athletics in exchange for cash considerations. To create room on the 40-man roster, Milwaukee transferred Quinn Priester to the 60-day Injured List.
Kuhnel arrives in Milwaukee after spending the first part of the season with the Athletics, where he briefly emerged as one of the club's trusted late-inning options. Early in the year, the 31-year-old collected four saves and found himself pitching in several high-leverage situations.
Rough Finish Ends Oakland Opportunity
While Kuhnel enjoyed a strong start to the season, his results took a turn in recent weeks. A difficult stretch at the end of May put pressure on his roster spot, and a disastrous appearance against the Chicago Cubs ultimately led to the Athletics designating him for assignment.
Tasked with protecting a ninth-inning lead, Kuhnel struggled to retire hitters and was charged with multiple runs before exiting the game. The outing significantly increased his season ERA and likely played a major role in the Athletics' decision to move on.
Despite the setback, Milwaukee sees enough value in the veteran reliever to bring him into the organization.
Experienced Arm Joins Injury-Thinned Bullpen
Kuhnel has accumulated major-league experience across multiple organizations during his career and offers the Brewers another option as they navigate a growing list of pitching injuries.
Milwaukee's bullpen has been hit hard throughout the season. Several key relievers have missed significant time, leaving the club searching for dependable depth. Although Kuhnel may not immediately step into a prominent role, he provides an experienced arm capable of handling middle-inning assignments.
The right-hander spent all of last season in Triple-A before earning another opportunity in the majors this year. His ability to generate ground balls and cover innings could make him a useful addition if he regains the consistency he showed earlier in the season.
Priester Faces Extended Recovery
The roster move also sheds light on Priester's ongoing recovery process. The right-hander continues to deal with thoracic outlet syndrome symptoms and remains far from returning to Milwaukee's pitching staff.
Recent rehab outings have produced uneven results, particularly with his command. Walks have been a persistent issue, and the organization recently moved him to a lower-level affiliate as he works to regain effectiveness.
With Priester expected to remain sidelined for several more weeks, the Brewers opted to use his roster spot to strengthen bullpen depth while awaiting further progress in his recovery.
