Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy taps Robert Gasser to lead the rotation when the Los Angeles Dodgers host their first game of the National League Championship Series.
The Milwaukee Brewers made a surprising move when they had Dustin May start Game 3 of the National League Division Series, and one would have to wonder if they could've swept the San Diego Padres had they gone with Robert Gasser instead.
Obviously, there's no point in looking back on that game, and it's not like one extra matchup derailed everything for this Brewers squad.
With Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on the horizon, it's important to note that Games 3 and 4 will take place no matter what now that this has shifted to a best-of-seven series.
Manager Pat Murphy has indeed gone with Gasser for Game 3 this time around, so while there could be a chance May starts Game 4, he could also opt to go for a bullpen game or use someone like Chad Patrick or Shane Drohan as a multi-inning opener.
Gasser gets the nod in Game 3 for Brewers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are staying quiet so far, but it's not hard to guess that left-handed pitcher Blake Snell is likely who they'll go with, according to MLB.com's Sonja Chen.
Gasser is a fellow southpaw, so things could get extremely interesting in the first game of the series to take place at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium.
Gasser, 27, is a California native who's doing everything he can to prove himself in this Brewers rotation. He's earned this spot over names such as Kyle Harrison, Brandon Sproat, Coleman Crow, Drohan, and Patrick, among others.
After throwing four innings of one-run baseball against the Padres, Drohan was pulled at just 56 pitches.
Murphy has been extremely strict about batters not seeing a starting pitcher the third time around, and it's clear that Gasser will be as fresh as ever since he had six full days of rest before Game 3 takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Dodgers expected to go with Snell
Snell, 33, has quite a bit more postseason experience than Gasser, who just made his first career playoff start in the NLDS.
The Washington native would be making his 17th career start in the postseason, and 20th overall appearance.
He threw 3.2 innings in the team's 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, Oct. 4. For Snell, he will have had nine full days in between starts, so it'll be interesting to see if that works out in the Dodgers' favor or not.
Snell may have only allowed one earned run on three hits, but he walked five batters, and that was a huge reason why he was pulled after throwing 90 pitches, which only recorded 11 outs.
