The Milwaukee Brewers held the Toronto Blue Jays to one run on Thursday, and that was largely because of Brandon Sproat.
The Milwaukee Brewers notched consecutive victories and a series win for the first time since April 4-5 after defeating the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, 2-1.
Milwaukee’s defense was the catalyst for the win, and the effort of right-hander Brandon Sproat provided an integral contribution. Sproat pitched 6 ⅔ innings and struck out six batters while allowing four hits, a walk, and an earned run.
After the game, he spoke with the media about his outing.
“Just taking it one pitch at a time, to be honest with you,” Sproat said. “Going out there and just, you know, doing the best I can. You know, hopefully the team comes out on top and just, you know, not worrying about results. Just playing freely, like Murph's talked about to us.That was just my biggest mindset today.”
William Contreras was behind the plate for Sproat on Thursday, and the dynamic the two had proved to be effective.
“I think the biggest thing was just, hey, just keep the rhythm up, you know. Just get the ball and go,” Sproat said. “Don't think about anything else, you know. Just attack, attack, attack. I think we did a really good job of that today.”
Sproat was able to get the first two outs of the seventh inning before being pulled from the game in favor of Aaron Ashby. It was an inning that Sproat would have liked to finish, but he was not going to pushback against manager Pat Murphy.
“Pretty bad, pretty bad,” Sproat said about his desire to finish the inning. “You know, I'm not, in my opinion, I'm not in the, you know, how do I want to put it...I guess it's not my time to fight Murph about that right now.
“But, no, I definitely wanted to finish the seventh,” he added. “But, you know, I trust the bullpen behind me. I trust his decision. You know, Ash came in and did his job.”
Ashby was able to get out of the seventh inning and got the win to improve to 5-0 on the year. Right now, Sproat is playing with a level of confidence that is beneficial for him on the mound.
“Just that I'm capable,” Sproat said about what added confidence means for him. “I'm capable of going out there, you know, making good pitches. Capable of going out there and getting a ground ball when needed. Just going out there and just giving it my all.
"That was the big word that, you know, he [Murphy] told me today," Sproat added. "He said, ‘hey, you know, you're more than capable.’ So, you know, hearing that from him is definitely a boost of confidence.”
