The Milwaukee Brewers are adding to their MLB roster with an extremely talented young prospect.

The Milwaukee Brewers are calling-up top catching prospect Jeferson Quero, Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase reported on Saturday.

The transaction, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, does not have catcher William Contreras as the corresponding move.

Who is Jeferson Quero?

The addition of Quero, 23, brings an exciting prospect into the clubhouse. He is the No. 8 prospect in the organization and is one of three catchers listed on the 40-man roster with Contreras and Gary Sanchez.

Quero signed with the Brewers in 2019 out of Venezuela for $200,000. Since then, he has made his mark in the organization as his play has elevated him through the minor-league ranks. It took less than five years for Quero to become a top 100 prospect.

Quero’s defensive prowess has been a key reason for his ascension, and MLB.com has referred to him as “one of the game’s best defensive prospects at any position,” citing his framing, blocking and arm strength.

However, Quero has been hampered by injuries. He began the 2024 season in Triple-A, but it came to a swift end after suffering a torn labrum in his right shoulder during his first game with Nashville. The surgery needed to repair the injury sidelined Quero for the rest of the season.

Quero would not be able to return to Triple-A until last June due to his recovery, but MLB.com reported that shoulder issues “sapped” his throwing. When healthy, he is a dominant force and a base-stealing denier.

Before coming to Nashville last season, Quero appeared in 11 games with the ACL Brewers, the organization’s rookie-level affiliate. In that span, he hit .371 with a 1.386 OPS, five home runs, and 13 RBIs in 35 at-bats.

What Does it Mean for Milwaukee?

In 58 games with Nashville, Quero hit .255 with a .748 OPS, six home runs and 44 RBIs. It was reported that once he began swinging with more intent, he got hotter at the plate.

This season, Quero had appeared in one game for Nashville before being called up.

It is clear that a healthy Quero can provide for the Brewers on both sides of the ball in a highly effective manner. His defense alone is something to get the fans excited for, especially when Contreras has never been the best defender as a backstop.

The Brewers have been successful in evaluating and elevating their international prospects, and it seems like Quero could add to that list.
