Brewers' Contreras Breaks Century-Old Record in World Series

Milwaukee Brewers' William Contreras dominated Game 1 with elite defense and a clutch bat, stifling the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Milwaukee Brewers have a major decision to make when it comes to extending catcher William Contreras or letting him walk.

A trade could certainly be on the table, but for now, they must relish these moments as he's lifted them up in more ways than one this postseason.

The Brewers took down the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series, 3-2, in a game that saw Contreras deliver one of the best performances in franchise history.

It's been 44 years since the Brewers have been in this moment, and it's clear no moment is too big for Milwaukee's backstop.

Officially, Contreras is the first catcher this century to have a World Series game with two or more hits to go along with two or more runners caught stealing.

The strike 'em out, throw 'em out situation that transpired in the top of the sixth inning was one to remember, and it came just one inning after he threw Victor Mesa Jr. out at third base to end the fifth inning.

In Game 1 of the Fall Classic, Contreras reached base three times and drove in the second run of the game.

Brewers' Contreras is on a different level

Contreras left his mark on Game 1 with a dominant 2-for-3 performance with a walk and RBI.

The catcher wasted no time swinging at the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first inning, and he was able to drive in Christian Yelich, who drove in Jackson Chourio prior with a massive RBI triple.

Hitting is contagious, and no one has done more of that this postseason than Contreras. He left Game 1 of the World Series with an unbelievable .394 batting average, one that comes with no shortage of sample size.

Contreras is now 13-for-33 in the playoffs with three home runs, and he has as many walks (six) as he does strikeouts (six).

The Venezuelan native has a 1.184 OPS this postseason, but it's been much more than just his offense that has guided this team to victory.

Contreras, who challenged more pitches in baseball than any catcher this season, was a perfect 2-for-2 in his ABS challenges against the Rays.

Those challenges came at crucial moments in the game, but none were more important than when he threw out a pair of baserunners in the fifth and sixth innings.

If the Brewers are going to win the World Series, it runs through Contreras, and to say he's done a great job so far isn't giving him nearly enough credit.
