After overcoming years of injury setbacks, the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder is finally healthy and power-hitting his way through a career-high season to cement his place in the lineup.
In a breakout that has been years in the making, Garrett Mitchell was all smiles after his two-run homer that helped the Milwaukee Brewers take down the Chicago Cubs 6-2.
Mitchell broke the game open with a two-out homer, the first that Cubs pitcher Ethan Roberts allowed against a lefty all year.
It was only a matter of time before Mitchell reached his full potential, but staying healthy was a huge part of that. Finally, Milwaukee has been able to see a huge sample size out of Mitchell, something they've been desperate for these past few seasons.
After the game, Mitchell spoke to the media about what this season has meant to him. It's clear the Brewers are onto something with the 27-year-old, but there's still a lot of baseball left to be played.
Mitchell Discusses Staying Healthy
"Thank you for noticing that," Mitchell said after the game, according to Hunter Bonair of Fox Sports 920 after he was asked about being active for the longest stretch of games of his young career. "I knew today was, I think it might be the same as '24, but I think it just kind of goes to the process that I put in.
"Obviously had some injuries in the past that were kind of out of my control, specifically with the shoulder stuff," he added. "So my goals this offseason, for me it was completely flipping the page and doing something different."
Mitchell continued, "I know there's a lot of things that worked for me in the past, but I had to take a different approach to that this year... Just taking it a day at a time. Focusing on my process, doing whatever I can to help the team win. But most importantly, from a personal standpoint, it feels good. This is what I've been wanting for years."
Mitchell Celebrates His Small Milestone
While it may not seem like a big deal to some, Mitchell called the first game of the Cubs series "emotional" due to it being his 69th game of the season. The lefty was indeed correct, that tied his career high for games played which he last set in 2024. Remember, last year he appeared in just 25 games.
Despite all of the Brewers success, Mitchell has just four at-bats in the playoffs. Fans haven't forgotten about his home-run, and that's something Mitchell is hoping he'll be able to provide for Milwaukee here in 2026.
Through a career high 218 major league at-bats, Mitchell is slashing .248/.345/.413 with a .758 OPS and 1.1 WAR.
