With a surplus of elite prospects and a dominant record, the Milwaukee Brewers face a pivotal choice: Protect the farm or trade young talent for a World Series run.

Tim Britton of The Athletic recently put the Milwaukee Brewers in a tier that's just below the Los Angeles Dodgers.

If Milwaukee wants to truly compete and fall into the "World Series or bust" category, they must be willing to cash in on future chips for present value, as Britton put it.

The Brewers have a surplus of prized prospects, which is exactly why they have the best farm system in all of baseball. For as good as this team has been, they don't tend to move on from any of those pieces during the season.

It's understandable why Milwaukee is blinded by the light, especially because of how great the likes of Jackson Chourio, Cooper Pratt, and Luis Lara have been. That said, 2026 could be their best chance to win it all, and if that includes trading a top prospect for a rental, so be it.

Brewers are listed as sustainable contenders

Being in Tier 2 certainly isn't a bad thing, but the Brewers know they want to be the team that stops the Dodgers from winning a third consecutive World Series.

Time and time again, the Dodgers take down the Brewers in the postseason. Last year wasn't the first time, though it didn't feel right getting swept by a team that Milwaukee had a better record than and beat in the regular season.

For now, Britton believes the Brewers are in the same tier as the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and Atlanta Braves.

"Is now the time to make a go at the Dodgers in the top tier?" Britton asked about the Brewers.

One could argue there's no better time than the present; it just comes down to what deals are made, and which prospects this organization is willing to part with.

Milwaukee can't be afraid to trade a prospect

Here in 2026, the Brewers would almost certainly regret not pursuing someone like Tarik Skubal. Rentals aren't how Milwaukee often does business, but there are a few major players on the market who would immediately make the Brewers a better team than they currently are.

Sitting at 66-39, that's truly hard to believe. Skubal is one of many players Milwaukee could bring in, and if they have to part with someone like Luis Pena or Josh Adamczewski, that's a decision they'll have to live with.

This organization is hungry to win a World Series, and this is their second straight year being considered one of the best teams in all of baseball. That said, it's clear they'll never be in the same conversation as the Dodgers until they go for broke, and that could happen in the next seven days.
