Jacob Misiorowski and Christian Yelich led the Milwaukee Brewers to a doubleheader-opening win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Milwaukee Brewers kicked off Tuesday’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 4-3 victory at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Tuesday’s win was Milwaukee’s third in a row by a one-run margin. How did they squeeze out of another close game?

'The Miz’ Overcomes Obstacles

Recently, Brewers All-Star right-hander Jacob Misiorowski has come back down to earth a bit more.

However, that has not stopped him from being dominant when his team needs him to be.

Tuesday’s outing started off rough by Misiorowski’s standards. He opened the first inning by hitting JJ Wetherholt with a pitch. Then, with two outs, Cardinals right fielder Jordan Walker made Misiorowski pay by belting his 21st home run of the season to left field to make it a 2-0 game.

Misiorowski subsequently gave up a double to Lars Nootbaar, but finally got out of the inning by notching his first strikeout of the day. In the bottom of the second, Misiorowski returned what has made him one of baseball’s most exciting young stars by striking out the Cardinals’ side.

After the Brewers tied the game in the top of the third inning, Misiorowski logged his fourth strikeout in a row before giving up his second home run of the afternoon. This time, it was in the form of a solo shot from Ivan Herrera that gave the lead back to St. Louis.

It was the last hit Misiorowski allowed for the rest of the afternoon.

After forcing a groundout and a pop out to escape the frame, Misiorowski and the defense retired the side again in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the 24-year-old struck out two of the three batters he faced and, in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, he replicated those results.

In the bottom of the eighth, Misiorowski was replaced by Aaron Ashby, which ended an afternoon in which he provided seven innings of work and struck out 11 batters while giving up three hits and three earned runs. Misirowski’s dominance, especially in the middle innings, made up for the two home runs he allowed.

Christian Yelich, Joey Ortiz Deliver

The month of July has not been easy for Brewers’ designated hitter Chrisitan Yelich.

But on Tuesday, he broke his slump.

Yelich went 3-for-5 in the first game of the double-header, and he supplied two RBIs for Milwaukee. In the third inning, he hit an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2, and in the seventh inning, he delivered an RBI double to give the Brewers a 4-3 lead that they carried to the finish line.

Making things happen for the offense alongside Yelich was Joey Ortiz, who had three hits in four at-bats and an RBI of his own. Overall, Yelich and Ortiz combined for six of Milwaukee’s 10 hits and three of its four runs.

Other contributors included Garrett Mitchell, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jake Bauers, who went 2-for-3. The Brewers will try to take the second game of the double-header when they face the Cardinals at 6:45 p.m. CT.
