Milwaukee Brewers turned to Greg Jones for infield depth after placing David Hamilton on the 10-day Injured List.

The Milwaukee Brewers made a series of roster moves Tuesday, highlighted by placing infielder David Hamilton on the 10-day Injured List because of a strained left hamstring.

Hamilton exited Monday's game after experiencing discomfort in his hamstring, and Milwaukee opted to give him time to recover rather than risk aggravating the injury during a packed schedule.

If Hamilton's recovery progresses as expected, the timing of the All-Star break could limit the number of games he ultimately misses.

Greg Jones earns another opportunity

To fill the vacancy, Milwaukee selected the contract of versatile infielder/outfielder Greg Jones, who returns to the major-league roster after previously appearing with the club earlier this season.

Jones signed with the Brewers on a minor-league contract during the offseason and briefly reached the majors before being designated for assignment. After clearing waivers, he remained in the organization and has now earned another opportunity.

Although his major-league production has been limited across stops with the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, and Brewers, Jones offers athleticism and defensive versatility.

He is capable of playing both middle infield positions as well as all three outfield spots, giving manager Pat Murphy multiple lineup options.

His speed has remained his biggest asset throughout his professional career.

Since the beginning of the 2023 season, Jones has stolen more than 100 bases in the minors while providing defensive value at several positions, making him a useful bench option despite offensive inconsistency.

Milwaukee adjusts its infield depth

Hamilton's absence is expected to increase the workload for Milwaukee's remaining infielders.

With Cooper Pratt handling shortstop duties and Joey Ortiz likely seeing more consistent time at third base, the Brewers lose some flexibility on the left side of the infield.

Jones has experience throughout the middle infield but has not played third base professionally, leaving Milwaukee with fewer natural backup options at the position.

The recent promotion of outfielder Luis Lara could also influence defensive alignments, allowing Sal Frelick to occasionally shift into the infield if additional coverage at third base becomes necessary.

Lockridge transferred to 60-day Injured List

The Brewers also transferred outfielder Brandon Lockridge to the 60-day Injured List, creating room for Jones on the 40-man roster.

Lockridge has been sidelined since early May after suffering a knee injury while attempting a catch near the outfield wall.

He later underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and remains without a firm timetable for returning, though he is now eligible to be activated whenever the club determines he is healthy enough to resume playing.
