Brewers Receive Positive Update on Ortiz's Potential Injury

MRI results reveal that battered Milwaukee Brewers' infielder Joey Ortiz is battling multiple ailments.

Time and time again, the Milwaukee Brewers are able to turn relatively average MLB players into superstars.

That's been the case with Joey Ortiz this season as he's one of the best hitters in all of baseball since the All-Star break.

With breakouts from the likes of Jake Bauers and Andrew Vaughn, Ortiz was the latest player to have his name join the list.

Now, moving forward, the team knows they need to be careful with how they manage his workload.

Obviously, skipping the Wild Card round will help, but a recent MRI came back to reveal that Ortiz is dealing with far more than just one injury.

To say he's banged up would be an understatement, but manager Pat Murphy knows he's a tough kid and will be able to play through the pain, especially with a trip to the World Series up for grabs.

Murphy comments on status of Ortiz

When it was first reported that Ortiz was getting an MRI, Brewers' Adam McCalvy noted he was dealing with oblique, right knee, and groin issues.

After the Brewers improved to 102-59, the back-to-back National League manager of the year provided an update on the breakout infielder.

"All good," Murphy said, according to FSRWI's Hunter Baumgardt. "His abdominal, there is a little swelling there. That's something to keep an eye on, in that particular area."

He continued, "The knee is still, it's not a bone bruise, it's just a contusion."

Hearing that Ortiz is "all good" at this point in the year is a huge sigh of relief; otherwise, Brewers fans would've been stuck with David Hamilton at third base throughout the playoffs.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with that, but Hamilton's speed and bunting abilities can only get the team so far, and Ortiz has proven on a consistent basis that he's a much better defender.

Ortiz is having a career year

While his .270 batting average is far higher than the .239 it was back in 2024, Ortiz had a 2.6 WAR in each of those two seasons.

The 28-year-old is slashing .270/.328/.402 here in 2026 with an OPS of .730, and it should be noted that all four of those numbers are new career highs.

Ortiz last played on Friday, Sept. 25, though no one would've ever known anything was wrong, as he was 2-for-3 with a walk in that game.

Ortiz is riding a three-game hitting streak, and he's hitting .348 in the month of September, which is his highest batting average in a full month this season.
